Pastilla – crispy pasty filled with shredded chicken, egg and onion cooked in delicious spice combined with a layer of roasted ground almonds and cinnamon – are normally reserved for special occasions and our busy Fringe/WOMAD season.  But now, we have all the flavour of the Pastilla, packed into handy snack size:

They have been quite the hit. Get yours at our next event!

Post of Shame. Remedied with Content Overload!

We have been bad, bad bloggers. Please forgive us?

We will now reward you with CONTENT OVERLOAD!

We had a great time in the Garden of Unearthly Delights over four weeks of the Adelaide Fringe – we got to share our love of Moroccan street food, meet some lovely people, feel a bit chuffed about so many nice comments and reviews & soak up the atmosphere that only the GOUD brings to Adelaide one special time a year.

The Moorish Bites Family

Just one of a few very nice reviews.

Some of our very popular Meloui – home-made pastry grilled and filled with spinach, rocket & feta. Optional fillings chicken, lamp, pumpkin, eggplant, mushroom and capsicum. Now we’re hungry just writing that sentence. Excuse us while we go whip a batch up…

And then we were exhausted:

cat napping

Note: Moorish Bites not actually operated by cats.

We managed to rally and:

  • Served up a storm at the last (and as usual fabulous) Adelaide Night Market for the 2014/2015 season – fear not good Adelaide folk, it is back for a new season!
  • Took the Mo’rockin’ van on a jaunt to the Barossa to celebrate Easter with Whistler Wines – a beautiful cellar door and people who know to put on a very good show.
The good folk of Whistler Wines celebrating the Easter long weekend.

  • Celebrated Adelaide’s Muslim community and the amazing multicultural support of Adelaide at the first Al Salam Festival.
  • Shared some tagine with a very large, well-groomed and hungry dog at the RSCPA Million Paws Walk.
Tagine for all!

Tagine for all!

  • Took the van on another outing not once but twice to our other premium wine region, specifically the beautiful Lazy Ballerina at Kuitpo, for their guests to relax in what has to be one of the best gardens around with some great tunes, tucking into our #moorishbites, and sampling some great wine.
The serenity of the back paddocks of Lazy Ballerina. A great view for the day!

  • Helped the next batch of young and eager students get acquainted with Adelaide University – we’re sure a good feed of #moorishbites helped them along!
Uni is better with Moorish Bites!

  • Two most excellent Forks on the Road – one at Harts Mill Port Adelaide & the other at Bonython Park – both had a huge turnout, which warms the heart of humble food trucks like us to see the support Adelaide has for our street food scene.  Good news too – there are many more Forks approaching!

  • We celebrated Moorish Bites’ First Birthday at the Semaphore Music Festival – one year to the day since we started trading, with Semaphore being our very first event.

  • The first (and hopefully one of many!) Victoria Square Art Market was held just last weekend – the turn out in support of local artists was amazing and the atmosphere made for a perfect sunny Sunday afternoon in the city.
Sunday in the centre of the city - what Adelaide is all about.

Putting the sun in Sunday.

  • Plus we got to cater a bunch of private functions and share our passion for Moroccan street food in people’s homes, workplaces and schools – weddings, dinners, school fundraisers, birthday milestone celebrations and baby showers. You celebrate it, we cater it!  If you are planning an event and are looking for something a bit different and a lot tasty, don’t hesitate to email moorishbites@gmail.com to make an enquiry about what we can do for you.

We also took time to have a bit of a winter hibernation.  Chef Mo’ took the opportunity to go back to his homeland of Morocco (and get some sun!) and could not escape his love of street food (and posing with it):

So. Again apologies for our lack of website content.  We hope this update has made (some) amends.

Tune in shortly for a rundown of our upcoming events – it’s going to be bigger & better for Moorish Bites over the warmer months of 2015/2016 and we can’t wait to share it with you 🙂

Don’t forget you can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Yours in tasty, tasty goodness,

Boys and power tools – a mighty bond.

We’ve since hit the Adelaide streets running in 2015, and its about to get even more exciting for Moorish Bites.  Coming up…

TODAY Sunday 25 January – Adelaide Night Market from 4 to 8pm, North Terrace

The wonderful Adelaide Night Market a monthly event held in the warmer months which had its 2nd Birthday in December.

It’s a great collection of both the well-known food trucks as well as smaller, family-run food stalls, plus artisanal craft and food goodies.  It’s also a great use of the usually under-enjoyed, but lovely stretch of garden along the top of Government House.

We’re excited to debut the Tagine Burger – slow-cooked lamb in Moroccan spices, topped with “Tefaya” (caramelised onion, sultanas and fried almonds) on a bed of saffron coleslaw, served on a toasted brioche bun.  Special today only for $10.00

Find us on North Terrace, near the War Memorial and corner of Kintore Avenue from 4-8pm.

The Porch Sessions – 9 February 2015 – gates from 5pm – location to be disclosed (intriguing!)

Our souk street food will be complementing the February, seaside-bound installment of the Porch Sessions.

This eclectic musical gathering creates a musical oasis, bringing the tunes, food and wine, Persian rugs, fairy lights and all-round good times to a secret residential garden once a month across the warmer seasons.

Tickets have already sold out for this and the next one (wowsers!), so if you were not lucky enough to nabs yours this time around you should stay tuned for their later installments here and be very, very quick!

The Garden of Unearthly Delights – 12 February to 15 March 2015

We are pumped to be selected to be a part of the Garden this year in our super stall form.  We’ll be serving our full compliment for the Fringe folk at the original and the best magical oasis of the festival season.

Check out the program here to see a show as well as savoring on our souk street food.

Usual Garden hours are 5pm to late Monday to Thursday and 10am to very late on Friday to Sunday –  look for the Mo’rockin Moorish Bites stall!

#Moorishlunch trade – last two weeks before Fringe!

It’s your last chance to catch us for weekday city lunch before we head into the Garden for February/March.

Trading locations can be subject to change (check Twitter or Facebook for any last-minute announcements), but our plan is:

Chef Mohamed’s Moorish Hometown

Just recently the New York Times sent the communal beating heart of Adelaide aflutter with their props to our fine city, including a shout out to our street food prowess, described as a:

robust dining scene that encompasses everything from street (Fork on the Road) to posh (Hill of Grace, atop the redeveloped Adelaide Oval)

Check out the full glory of #RADelaide or otherwise adjust your bucket list accordingly here.

IN ADDITION, The New York Times also recently gave Chef Mohamed’s Moroccan hometown a beautiful write up:

Chefchaouen, known for its blue-painted walls - Ben Sklar for The New York Times

Chefchaouen, known for its blue-painted walls – Ben Sklar for The New York Times

Of course, Chefchaouen — or Chaouen, as it’s sometimes called — is already famous as an outrageously picturesque blue-walled city. Inside the ancient gated medina nearly every building is painted an arresting shade of cerulean or azure, the sky blues juxtaposed with white trim and terra-cotta rooftops. Twisting cobblestone paths lead up and up, around the ocher-colored casbah, past a crumbling cemetery where goats graze, to a landscape of green hills and mountaintops, uninterrupted sky extending beyond. It’s like being inside a Chagall painting.

We can’t wait to go back on our next food safari and to bring back even more exciting flavours and Moroccan artisan products to our ‪‎#moorishflock‬ of Adelaide!

If you want to lose yourself for a few minutes in a beautiful pocket of Morocco, read the article and then Google “Chefchaouen” and prepare for a serious case of wanderlust.

Otherwise check back in for our upcoming series of posts on Mohamed’s life in Morocco, Moroccan food, travel and culture.

That’s a (Poccadio) wrap for 2014!

PHEW!

In less than three short, crazy months we have been at:

PLUS weekly #moorishlunch trade in Victoria Square, Light Square and Hindmarsh Square

AND private functions that saw us chug up the freeways to Hahndorf and McLaren Vale (apologies motorists!)

We’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all of our #moorishbites foodie followers who have supported us, given us the nicest of compliments, shared/liked/retweeted us and to those special few who have tracked us down and made a beeline for the van no matter rain, hail or shine!

Special mention must go to:

  • Moorish Mamma Jan McFarlane who thought she’d retired, but alas thought wrong and has pulled many a shift in the van
  • Papa Peter McFarlane for his wisdom and supervision of all the technical/regulatory stuff
  • Ali & Samra, Jacqui Forte & Robb Muirhead and Leon Budden for being the best of friends, helpers, instructors and supporters
  • Bowen Ellames for an amazing van design (and who is now being fabulous whilst designing spaceships in Qatar)
  • Nick Coutts for being our ‘on call’ photographer no matter the hour of the night

And also:

  • Splash Adelaide for their commitment to making Adelaide = #RADelaide and running an amazing mobile food vending program
  • AND our #adelaide #foodtruck comrades for their advice, food swaps and loaning us of the occasional spare change/cooking oil/petrol/cutlery/rubbish bin/car jack

‘Made it’

You know you’ve ‘made it’ when a superannuation fund blogs about you in an Australia-wide #foodtruck roundup!

Taking its cues from Morocco’s glorious spice filled souks, Moorish Bites delivers tagines, cous cous and meloui -crispy grilled pastry filled with a variety of options depending on your preference. Locally sourced produce meets traditional cooking techniques and the results speak for themselves.
